The Purpose of this Blog...

Originally, it was "To watch all the important films in World Cinema and write something intelligent in response."

It was an ambitious goal, and I was making some progress. I have slowed down considerably. This is still meant to be a blog of poetry about film. I may add some trivia or prose. I just added a poem about a cable series. It is an evolving project.

COLLEGE (1927)

The brilliance of Buster Keaton
in this role
is making complete failure
at absolutely everything
look like only slight
exaggeration

I share your enthusiasm about Buster Keaton. I feel the truth of what you say here about his approach.

One of the images of Keaton that will stay with me always is of him sitting on a surface in The General, with his mind fixed on some point either very deep inside himself, or, very far outside. The surface on which he sits is the brace between two locomotive wheels -- which momentarily begin to rise and fall with the movement of the machine. The strength of his concentration makes the fact of its movement immaterial, perhaps dwarfing its importance. Of course, this could only work in a silent movie. But his genius manipulates the medium to maximum effect.
